Varieties of Helmeted Guinea Fowl
When found in the wild, Helmeted Guinea Fowl are dark grey with thousands of white polka-dots.  This color and pattern is known as pearl grey or pearl.  Since
the domestication of guineas, other colors and patterns have been developed.  White birds had shown up in flocks and with them came pied variations.  A white
bird carries two recessive genes for white coloring.  A pied bird is a bird that only receives one of these recessive genes.  This causes the bird to have patches
of white on its body, rather than a full white or full colored plumage.   Blue colored birds appeared, as well as buff or tan.  Among these categories there are also
different darknesses and shades.  Not only are there different colors of guineas, but there are different patterns as well.  Some guineas have the spotting on all
of their feathers, while others have absolutely no markings at all.  Some semi-spotted birds have a small amount of dots and barred feathers in their flanks,
shoulders and wings.  In all, there can be over 60 combinations of colors and patterns.  This page will help you decipher them.
